Central Questions
- Why is Adobe not developing Central further?
-
While Central generated a lot of interest and excitement in the software community, we learned a lot from the developer community about how to best enable web applications beyond the browser. We felt these issues were best addressed by restarting our desktop strategy in a new initiative, code-named Apollo.
- Can I continue using Central?
-
Yes, Central will still continue to function and you can continue to use it. However, because Adobe won’t be actively supporting it, Adobe will not be providing security updates or patches. Additionally, Central may over time cease to function properly.
- Can I continue using applications that I’ve already downloaded?
-
Yes, but Adobe cannot guarantee that applications will continue to function as many Central applications involve remote data sources which Adobe does not control. Contact the application vendor for more support details.
Contracts that will expire include the data sources for the AccuWeather and MovieFinder applications. AOL is also planning to discontinue the AIM service within Central. Thus, AIM-enabled applications may not function going forward.
- Will customer and developer support still be available?
-
Due to the low volume of support requests, we have decided to end end-user and developer support for Central at this time.
- Can I download the Developer Center articles and resources?
-
Yes, the Central Developer Center has been archived and is available for download on the Central product home page.
- How do I continue building applications integrating AOL Instant Messaging?
-
As of March 2007, the AOL Instant Messaging (AIM) SDK for Macromedia Central will no longer be functional or actively supported. Please visit developer.aim.com to find the most current resources to integrate AIM into your applications, plug-ins and mashups.
- What happens to applications I’ve built?
-
Applications that you have built will not be impacted by this change; they will continue to function as intended. You may see a decline in the number of active users as people move away from Central and on to Apollo.
- Who can I talk to if I have more questions?
-
Central developers should contact Product support if they have questions. Central customers should contact Customer support.
Apollo Questions
- What is Apollo?
-
Apollo is a client runtime for web applications, combining Adobe’s strong Flash and PDF technologies with standard HTML rendering capabilities, and enhancing many of the features that were appealing in Central: one-click install, online/offline applications, and deep system integration.
- Where can I find more information on Apollo?
-
You can learn more about Apollo today from the Adobe Labs wiki
